Rocky River Community Honors Service and Remembers September 11
On Sunday, September 6, a powerful display of American flags was installed at Rocky River High School, continuing an annual tradition that stands as a symbol of gratitude, service and remembrance throughout the Rocky River community.
The display was installed in preparation for the Danny Scherry Salute to Service football game on Friday, September 11, while also carrying special significance this year as the nation commemorates the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Presented in partnership with NEOPAT and Operation Flags of Freedom, the flags serve as a visible tribute to the courageous men and women who have served our nation and communities. They also honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who ran toward danger and the military service members who answered our nation’s call in the years that followed.
Carrying Forward the Legacy of LCpl Daniel Scherry
At the heart of Rocky River’s annual Salute to Service is the memory of LCpl Daniel “Danny” Scherry, Rocky River High School Class of 2005, whose courage, sacrifice and legacy continue to inspire the community.
In partnership with NEOPAT, Danny Scherry’s Salute to Service is built around three important goals: honoring military members of the Rocky River community, inspiring students and community members to help and serve others, and promoting patriotism and civic pride throughout Rocky River.
That spirit of service was already on display Sunday. NEOPAT extends its sincere appreciation to Boy Scout Troop 241 of Fairview Park and members of the Rocky River football team for volunteering their time to install the flags. Their efforts created a meaningful place for students, families and community members to pause, reflect and remember.
Salute to Service Friday Night
The display sets the stage for the Danny Scherry Salute to Service football game this Friday, September 11, at Rocky River High School. The annual game brings the community together to recognize military service members, veterans and first responders while carrying forward Danny Scherry’s legacy.
The evening is also an opportunity to turn remembrance into action. Everyone attending Friday’s game is encouraged to bring canned goods in support of the Rocky River Assistance Program, providing another meaningful way to serve local families and neighbors in need.
Through the flag display, Salute to Service and community service efforts, Rocky River continues to demonstrate the values at the heart of this annual tradition: gratitude, service, remembrance, patriotism and unity.
