The Memorial Day Ceremony hosted by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company served as a powerful reminder of the true meaning behind Memorial Day — honoring the courageous men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation. Employees, community members, veterans, and military families gathered together in reflection and gratitude as the ceremony paid special tribute to Navy Corpsman Max Soviak and veteran James Shaffer.
The families of both heroes were recognized during the ceremony, creating an emotional and meaningful moment as those in attendance stood in appreciation of their sacrifice and continued strength. The Shaffer family, who Goodyear was honored to recognize as the 2025 White Star Family, represented the legacy of James Shaffer’s service in both the United States Marine Corps and United States Army. Their presence served as a heartfelt reminder that Memorial Day is not only about remembering those we have lost, but also supporting the families who carry their legacy forward each day.
Special recognition was also given to the life and sacrifice of Navy Corpsman Max Soviak. Max’s dedication to serving others and his selfless commitment to his country continue to inspire communities throughout Northeast Ohio and beyond.
One of the most moving moments of the ceremony came through remarks shared by Max’s father and brother, who spoke about Max not only as a service member, but as a son, brother, friend, and teammate. Their reflections offered a deeply personal look into his character, his love for family, and the values that guided his life. Their words brought both emotion and perspective to the ceremony, reminding everyone in attendance that behind every fallen hero is a family forever impacted by that sacrifice.
Throughout the event, the support and patriotism displayed by the Goodyear team was evident. Employees and leadership came together to ensure the ceremony reflected the respect and honor deserved by our fallen service members. The atmosphere was one of unity, reflection, and sincere gratitude for those who gave everything in defense of our freedoms.
A particularly moving moment also came during remarks delivered by Brian Wilson, whose speech captured the deeper meaning of Memorial Day and challenged those in attendance to remember the human stories behind the holiday weekend. His words, along with reflections shared by others throughout the ceremony, emphasized the importance of honoring sacrifice not only through remembrance, but through continued support of military families, veterans, and the values these heroes defended.
Also in attendance were Monica Carmen and LuAnn George from Valor Home in Akron, as well as Melissa Wise from Ohio Survivor Outreach Services, whose continued work supporting veterans, surviving families, and military communities across Ohio reflects the spirit of service and compassion recognized throughout the event.
As Northeast Ohio prepares to observe Memorial Day, ceremonies like this one help ensure the stories of heroes like Max Soviak and James Shaffer are never forgotten. Their service and sacrifice continue to inspire our community and remind us all of the tremendous cost of freedom.
