Northeast Ohio is making history this month as the future USS Cleveland (LCS-31) arrives in its namesake city for a weeklong celebration leading up to its official commissioning into the United States Navy. For the first time in American history, a U.S. Navy warship is being commissioned in the State of Ohio, creating an unforgettable moment for Cleveland, the military community, and all those gathering along the lakefront to celebrate.
Commissioning Week officially begins with Arrival Day as the ship sails into Cleveland escorted by a flotilla of boats and welcomed by supporters gathered across Lake Erie shoreline communities waving American flags in honor of the crew. Residents line parks and waterfront locations from Vermilion to Cleveland to witness the arrival of the Navy vessel that proudly carries the city’s name.
The excitement continues during Community Day at North Coast Yard, where families from across Northeast Ohio have the opportunity to meet Sailors from the ship, learn more about naval service, and celebrate the beginning of Commissioning Week together. The family-friendly atmosphere highlights the strong connection between the crew of the USS Cleveland and the community they now represent.
One of the most anticipated opportunities of the week is the public ship tours, allowing visitors to step aboard the USS Cleveland and experience the vessel firsthand. Guests explore portions of the ship, learn about the mission of the Littoral Combat Ship program, and gain a deeper appreciation for the technology, teamwork, and dedication required to serve aboard a modern naval warship.
Throughout the week, Cleveland welcomes not only the Sailors serving aboard the ship, but also their families, Navy leadership, veterans, and supporters from around the country. Additional ceremonies and community events continue to honor the significance of the moment and the partnerships making the commissioning possible.
The culmination of the week takes place on Saturday, May 16, during the official Commissioning Ceremony at North Coast Yard. The ceremony formally places the USS Cleveland into active service and marks the beginning of the ship’s operational life in the Navy fleet. Navy tradition is on full display as the crew ceremonially “mans the ship and brings her to life,” symbolizing years of preparation, sacrifice, and support becoming reality.
The USS Cleveland is the fourth Navy vessel to carry the city’s name and the final Freedom-variant Littoral Combat Ship to enter service. Carrying the motto “Forge a Legacy,” the ship represents not only the strength and resilience of the U.S. Navy, but also the pride, grit, and spirit of Cleveland itself.
For Northeast Ohio, Commissioning Week is more than a naval ceremony — it is a celebration of patriotism, community, and the enduring connection between the military and the city of Cleveland.
